Lice Mother

plays out in one of the most familiar arenas in the Netherlands: the absurd world of the primary school. An exceptional mini-society with its own playground rules, parking management, goodbyes-etiquette, loitering parents, teacher-parent’s evenings, responsible birthday treats, class group apps, crossing guard duties … and lice mothers.

Determined to get her new life on track as soon as possible, Hannah, the newly divorced mother with a daughter just starting school, delves into the world that plays out on and around the school playground. Unfortunately, there are no integration courses, so Hannah tries to get to grips with the school playground rituals through trial and error; even though she had promised herself not to get dragged in and manipulated at this school. Strange teachers and the overbearing ‘mother mafia’ don’t make it easy for her. Yet, when it comes down to it, no parent can evade it, and that counts for Hannah too. Before you know it, you are in five group apps, you’re responsible for the charity pot and you have been given the title of ‘lice mother’.

In 'Lice Mother' we follow the parents and teachers throughout the school year. From the first day of school to the feared St Nicholas festivities, chaotic Christmas, irritating 1 April and the stressful summer party. No cliché is spared.

Lice Mother will be broadcast in the Netherlands from 14th January 8.20 pm on NPO3.
